Thursday September 4th

7:00pm-9:00pm

Thinking about rushing?  Well, here are a few FAQ's about Omega Phi Alpha and the rush and pledging processes...

What is a service sorority and how does it differ from other (social) sororities?

Omega Phi Alpha is a service sorority: most of the sororities in the United States are social sororities. The two types have a lot in common, but there are a few distinct differences.

Just like social sororities, O Phi A has a "pledge" period where new members learn about the sorority's history and how it currently operates. They get to know the sisters and the sisters get to know them. We have big sister/little sister relationships, business meetings, and lots of fun! It's an opportunity to build friendships that can last a lifetime.

But a central theme in Omega Phi Alpha's day-to-day operations is SERVICE. Not just a few big projects each year, but an ongoing program of service. As a matter of fact, the most important committee at the chapter level is the service committee headed by the chapter's service vice president. This emphasis is the primary difference between Omega Phi Alpha and the traditional "social" sorority.

How do I become a pledge?

You watch for our fliers and rush dates the first weeks of school, or if you don't hear or see anything contact the membership director who's information is provided above.  You can also come to our rush events which are listed above.

The Alpha Alpha chapter holds a formal rush due to our commitment to service.  Based upon interest, level of commitment, participation, and devotion to community service we will select as many girls as our chapter allows at the current time.

What is a pledge period and how long does it last?

Basically a pledge period means that as a pledge "class" you will learn the values, history and inner workings of the sorority.  You will get to plan and carry out service projects as a pledge class, as well as sisterhood events so that you get to know the active members as well.  You will hold your own, separate, meetings from the active chapter but you are not excluded from any active events or activities.  It will last the length of one semester and you will become active once you have met all your pledging requirements.

Any other questions?

Feel free to contact the Membership Director, information listed above, with any additional questions or concerns about rush or OPA.
